Gluten Free Went For Solvent Free Perfection

A major international food manufacture making cereal bars and gluten free products took possession of a design built industrial unit with 14,000m2 of space for their production facility.

They required a durable floor with anti-slip to 6000m2 to accommodate their budget. Surface Solutions were chosen as industrial flooring contractors to put forward a specification to meet their demands and time scale. The system was a trowel applied liquid screed with a high build epoxy coating, with a degree of anti-slip as a finish, which fitted their budget of £225k.

The biggest problem was low temperatures of -3°C outside and as yet, there was no heating within the building. Surface Solutions appointed a heating company to bring the room temperature up to a constant 16c so we could apply the resin system.

Once the heating was in place we used our ride on vacuum assisted shot blasters to prepare the floor. Then we applied a solvent free epoxy primer and broadcast a dry silica sand in to the wet resin.

The next stage was to apply the 2mm, self smoothing screed and finally apply the epoxy coating with the anti-slip finish. When cured we used vacuum assisted floor saws to cut and reinstate any movement joints in the new system.

The works was carried out in two phases and each phase took 9 days to complete.
